“I am jealous of everything whose beauty does not die. I am jealous of the portrait you have painted of me... Why did you paint it? It will mock me some day - mock me horribly!”
The Portrait of Dorian Gray is Oscar Wilde’s classic decadent gothic masterpiece about beauty, youth, vanity, temptation and moral decay. First published in 1890 in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine, the book published the following year was later used as evidence against Wilde at the Old Bailey in 1895.
Dorian Gray is young, beautiful and easily enthralled by Lord Henry Wotton’s glittering ideas about pleasure. When Basil Hallward paints his portrait, Dorian wishes that the image might age in his place. The wish comes true. As he drifts through luxury, corruption, cruelty and crime, his face remains untouched while the hidden portrait records every stain on his soul.

About this pre-owned copy
This a fine book with the jacket, novel pages and binding all in great condition. There are some scuffmarks on visible on the slipcase as shown, likely from shelving. The book is otherwise in very good condition and appears to be from the first printing. The cover foiling and green patterned end-papers are especially elegant.
